T-Shirt Fundamentals

In a time where fashion is constantly changing before our eyes, we can easily get swamped by the variety of embellishments, patterns, and designs available around the world. Ever opened your closets, then close them because you don’t see anything new or original to your eyes? And did you open your closets back up again, hoping that the fashion gods magically placed a boutique in it? We can only dream…No worries! A fresh, new outfit is already available to you—-and you already have the pieces to create it.

It’s time to step back and re-introduce the original closet-staple: a basic white tee. Say whaaaaat? That’s right!  A simple, white tee is a must for any closet, regardless of what your style may be. Don’t let its simplicity fool you, my friend! This is a piece that can easily be dressed up in numerous ways and make you look just as fashionable. Here are a few ways to take advantage of our versatile friend!

  1. Keep It Plain and Simple: Pairing a white t-shirt with a favorite pair of jeans is a classic style that will never get old. It looks fresh, clean, and lightweight on anyone! This look is very laid back and comfortable—perfect for anyone who is in a rush to get out of their home! You don’t even have to worry about what kind of jeans to wear; everything matches with it! Super easy! Top this off with a pair of converse and you’re all set to go!Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 10.49.11 AM

  1. Scarf Galore: Adding a scarf with your t-shirt is an excellent way to spice up your outfit. Scarves come in a variety of colors and designs that’ll fit any mood, and they keep you feeling toasty! Since the top half is now bulkier in fabrics, I recommend keeping the bottoms form fitting with skinny jeans or leggings. Try to stick with a dark color such as dark navy or black, because these are the colors to create the illusion of slimmer legs. Fashionable and figure-slimming? Score!

  1. Cute As a Button (Up): Sometimes buttoning up a dress shirt all the way can make you feel stuffy and uncomfortable. Your white t-shirt is here to the rescue! By wearing it underneath, you can opt to not button any of your dress shirt’s button to give that free flowing look, or you can choose to unbutton a few at the top to give yourself a little bit of room to breathe! This can make for a more professional look with the right type of chinos.

  1. Cardigans Cardigans Cardigans: Who doesn’t love cardigans? Using your white tee as the basic canvas of the outfit, your cardigan’s designs and colors can really pop! The length of the cardigan can easily change up the look. The shorter cardigans make for a very simple and clean look. For these, I suggest more fitted dress pants for a professional look, and distressed boyfriend jeans for a casual look. Longer cardigans create a comfortable, relaxed one. Cardigans also create the look of a lot of fabric on the top, so pair this outfit with some nice leggings or skinny/straight leg jeans. Take your pick!

  1. Suited for the occasion: Late for work? Not a problem! Layering a white t-shirt with a nice blazer is the best way to spruce up your outfit for work. Like a cardigan, almost any blazer matches the shirt and helps keep your feeling comfortable yet professional. Dress it down with dark washed jeans for the illusion of thinner legs to contrast the broader shoulders of the cardigan. Or go all the way and choose a fabulous pair of dress pants to help you feel like you’re the beauty queen of the office!Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 10.39.57 AM

  2. B&W: Nothing is more chic and sophisticated that the classic color scheme of black and white. Play up with this scheme by wearing a black skirt with your white tee for a comfortable, dressy look. For a clean cut look, pair it with dress pants that have folds down the front of the leg for an appropriate dimension. I highly recommend to go for wide-legged, harem pants for a casual and breezy outfit that looks both classy and stylish!

  1. Belted Beauty: If you feel like the white t-shirt does your waist no justice, just add on a belt! A belt with a white shirt is the easiest way to accentuate your waist to give yourself a defined figure. It’s easy for you to feel like your body is lost under all the fabrics. Add this accessory for a more polished look! Because you’ve accentuated the waist, you want for your hips to appear slightly wider for the perfect hourglass look. Do so by pairing this outfit form fitting jeans that will really hold the shape of your waist to give the illusion of a full hip.

  1. Splash of Color: Since white is very basic, it may seem boring to some people. Colored bottoms are slowly coming back in style and is a fun way to add more color to your life! Try not to aim for colored leggings, because those do not have seams that will define your legs’ shape. Colored jeans of the perfect fit can really wow that booty with the help of the simple white t-shirt.

  1. Printing Press: Prints are very popular nowadays in pop-fashion. We’ve got everything from the animal prints to galaxy prints. Experiment with the different patterns and designs even if they do seem outrageous and ridiculous. Your white tee will surely tone the patterns down without draining them out. It’s the yin to the yang! Try it out!

  1. Max it Out: Because of the white tee’s flowy nature, a maxi skirt is the perfect piece to enhance the gracefulness of your outfit! Depending on the pleats, cuts, and folds of the skirt, you can make your outfit look high end or bohemian. It’s an easy way to look well dressed with half the effort!
