Menswear Mondays: Do’s & Don’ts

Alright fellas, I know that most of you think that your fashion sense is fine as is, so I’m going to save both of us some time and get down to the nitty gritty.

In my 21 years of living, I thought that some of you boys’ fashion faux pas would be a phase that you would grow out of by the time you reached 15. However, the sad truth is that some of you haven’t and I’ve had the unfortunate opportunity to witness it myself. I understand that fashion may be a “girly” thing, but let’s face it — you don’t walk into a Friday night spot and say, “Hey, I think that girl has a good personality.” Well I hate to break it you boys, but girls judge you the same way you judge us.

I’m going to provide brief tips on things that can be a total game changer for us gals, considering school is starting rather soon and I’m hoping this will get you to improve your wardrobe.

Now I have to admit that not all guys have trouble dressing themselves, which is why I have faith that other boys can do the same.

The first DON’T that I decided to feature is one that most girls can agree to — raggedy, dirty sneakers.I get that they may be the sneakers that you were wearing the night you lost your virginity and also happened to be wearing when you took first place in your friend’s fantasy league last season. However, it’s time to dress your feet just as well as you would dress the rest of your self.

Instead try a pair of nice clean sneakers or even experiment with some boat shoes:

DON’T wear jean shorts (jorts) EVER. End of story. Unless you’re trying to pull off the hipster look or join a boy band.

Instead try some colored shorts or even a nice pair of fitted jeans:

DON’T wear t-shirts that:

  • look like your kid sister bedazzled.
  • are of the Affliction brand.
  • are 5 sizes too big and look like someone’s “before” shirt in a Subway weight loss commercial.

Instead don’t be shy and try a v-neck, you may feel awkward, but every girl loves a good v-neck.

Personally, this specific DON’T started to bug a few months into college. DON’T use a drawstring back-sack as a book bag for class. It’s one thing to use for the gym, it’s a completely other thing to wear it around campus with an actual outfit.

So the next time you find yourself trying to sweet talk your way to a girl’s phone number, keep these in mind because they could potentially be the reason you leave a spot with the same amount of contacts you walked in with.

  1. Definitely agree with most of what you say. Just started my own style blog, but I still judge a guy for walking into a bar in my college town wearing sneakers. Put on some loafers. Even the most basic pair, like your aforementioned boat shoes, go much farther than your Nikes or New Balances. Save those for running. And T-shirts. Honestly, those should never see the dim light of a bar. Wear something with a collar for crying out loud.
